My Way of Life

Lots of films this weekend besides The Girl Can’t Help It. Well, okay two other films, but three trips to the theater is a lot for one weekend. Friday, we saw Strangers With Candy- The Movie. Who doesn’t love the genius of Amy Sedaris? Not everybody. My friend Cara can’t look at her so she doesn’t watch, but since she’s mad for Chapelle (something I don’t really get), we’ll chalk it up to ‘It’s just you and me, and we just disagree’.
Anyway, I had sort of high expectations for this film, and yes, it has brilliantly funny moments…but it also falls flat in several places, particularly the Stephen Colbert scenes. It just could have been better . My other gripe is that they totally wasted Deborah Rush, Jerri’s wicked stepmother. She has one of our favorite lines from the series “I came as soon as I felt like it.” The guest stars are totally wasted too- like SCARRIE chaperones…
Still, there were really funny moments and we love Amy. Just wish it was funnier with more of those brilliant moments. It was also difficult to hear some of the lines because we went on opening night which featured live appearances by the very funny Gregory Holliman (from Chicago!), and the overly zealous Strangers With Candy geeks laughed at just about anything (except Sarah Jessica Parker). Seriously, they were laughing before the punchline.

Sunday night Chris begged to go see The Devil Wears Prada and while these were two different films they had the same enjoyment level. Good, with moments of greatness. All of these moments involved the divine Meryl Streep.
