My Way of Life

It occurred to me I never reported that Caged Dames was not accepted to the New York International Fringe Festival. Or did I? Of course, if we were I would have posted it immediately I was a little pissed when we weren’t. By the time I thought to post it I was knee deep in other things. We didn’t get our rejection letter until the day of the deadline to accept, and actually it was an offer to be an alternate. I never replied. I was going the Kubler- Ross stages- you know, pissed, sad, pissed even more, sad and really pissed. The final stage was probably relief as with Summer Camp and The Birds in the Fall it’s nice not to have to worry about mounting a show the scope of Caged Dames in New York. The New York International Fringe Festival is very expensive for any larger show. Particularly a musical.  I know this from first hand experience with POSEIDON!, the show that critics loved here and thought was ‘okay’ in NYC, although the audiences loved it. Audiences love Mamma Mia too, so…

I also felt bad for the dames. They were psyched to go The ‘dames’ being the entire cast and crew of Caged Dames. Most of us still hang out and some great frindships were made during the show, which made it a little extra special. As I said, I went through many levels, okay, TWO levels of feelings towards the Dames rejection. Then I went to the Fringe site and realized why we weren’t accepted.   I had read about this show earlier during the run of Caged Dames or the rehearsal, I forget. The same concept, the same influences, but the difference is that the creators have been in the business a along time, and they’ve been working on Slammer, The Musical for 10 years. Yeah, thats what it says, 10 years.  I haven’t read the script. The songs? Judge for yourself. This is 10 years worth of work.  I hope its fabulous. I mean if it sucked, that would make it even worse.

  1. 10 years? Oh, well, I guess they can’t help it if they’re slow learners…:-)
