My Way of Life
Yesterday I met with Scott Bradley to discuss details about The Birds. Scott is directing the piece. Sean Graney is the Art Director. That’s the crew so far…
I suppose The Birds is the first show of our new season which is almost set. The Birds, Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer (10 years!), and a yet to be determined title. The yet to be determined title is annoying, yes as we have been working on trying to get yet to be determined title for almost 3 years now, but when you’re a non-equity company with not a lot of cash you have to deal with the deck of cards you’ve got. As Mr. Kenny Rogers so eloquently put it, you’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold them… Or was that my dry cleaning lady? Right now we’re holding ‘em, but as Miss Doris Day sang, Que Sera’, Sera’. There are way bigger problems then trying to figure out your season. The Birds will open the week of October 1 and run for 7 weeks at Berger Park. Tickets aren’t on sale yet because we haven’t ironed out the prices or the particular days yet. I’m excited about The Birds because with new people come new ideas. The Birds marked the end of Sweetback Productions, the company I was with before Handbag, so besides being a very special show to me it also has the distinction of being one of those big bookmarks of life. You know, ‘Oh that happened after The Birds… ’ 9/11 happened during the rehearsals of the original Birds and, although we didn’t know it (well, I kind of knew it), the twin towers that were Sweetback Productions were collapsing around us too. Downed by the it’s own founder on a her own private little Kamikaze mission that I don’t think she was aware of. By the end of the production it was too late to put the pieces back together. We were all elated, exhausted and disgusted. Excuse me, I have to go read my book of Suzanne Somers poetry.

I’m so excited to see “The Birds”, it was the first time I’d ever heard of your company. My friend Erica went and was just raving about it; I think that’s how Michael Miller got involved because he went with Erica. All roads lead… so they say…
