My Way of Life

yma

The voice if Xtabay has passed away. The legendary Yma Sumac has passed away at the age of 86. Who the hell is Yma Sumac?  Well, only one of the greatest singers of all time! She claimed to have a 5 octave range. I discovered Yma in the 80’s. Yma was a predecessor to Nina Hagen and Lene Lovich (who?), and really there is no contempory vocalist you can compare her too. She billed herself as descendant from Peruvian royalty but some people thought her name was just an anagram for Amy Camus, a housewife from New Jersey. Her life was a whirlwind of exotic glamor. A castle built with smoke and mirrors. RIP, Yma.

  1. I was so sad to hear about this. I knew she was in a nursing home in L.A. Did you ever get to see her in here last tour. She played at some club around 1990. I’m still kicking myself I didn’t go.

I posted her Miracles album on my site. It’s the most amazing album.

  2. I had the Miracles album in the 80’s and it is lost. One of my friends probably destroyed it… NEVER saw her live.
