My Way of Life

So in-between writing and rehearsing I have watched some television and the new Logo show, Rupaul’s Drag Race is one of them. I am not sure about this one as the most interesting person on the show is Rupaul herself. It’s a drag competition with the ‘best queens’ from across the nation competing for some okay prizes. I kind of have mixed feelings about the show. Yes, it’s interesting and folks in the suburbs or people who have not been exposed to the world of ‘fierce, deep delish drag’ might find it riveting, I find it a little predictable.   So far two episdoes have aired and they immediately got rid of the fat hometown drag queen, Victoria Parker. She had the most drag experience but she was not very chic, fierce or versatile, and it made me wonder why she was in it in the first place. The second contestant was this Jane Hudson like girl who was like a fish out of water among these Beyonce loving clonettes.  She didn’t even try to rise up to the ‘girl group’ challenge which is fine but why did shoe go to the trouble of being ion the show in the first place? Honestly these girls really haven’t changed since I first did drag back in the stone age. They’re mean, petty,  and they seem to be the meanest to each other which is a shame. All you have to do is check out any sort of well well known drag queens Myspace page or ask one about another or hang around them for more then an hour and you get the idea. I’m fierce bitch, you’re not. Okay, so you’re fierce- what else, you got?

  1. They ain’t got NOTHING else, actually. They don’t feel they have to, because nobody’s ever made them stretch themselves. To these kids, it’s always been a big tragic fashion show, where they tape back their balls, put on a fugly dress, apply their make-up with a trowel, stand around trying to look sleek and cat-like and make nasty comments that start with “bitch” or “girl.”

There are very few who are actually funny or talented–RuPaul, Lady Bunny, Coco Peru and Jackie Beat are among the very few, because they invented themselves during a time when you needed a sense of humor to survive.
