Well, at long last - the return of “Poseidon: An Upside Down Musical”. When it was originally staged in 2003 those who got to see it had an experience they will never forget. I myself saw it six-times in seven weeks. I only missed one week because I was in the hospital having surgery. But the following week I was back there - stitches and all. Why? What could make me so obsessive about this show? It’s simple:
THIS IS THE FUNNIEST GODDAMN THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE.
It is brilliant in a way that most theater strives to be but never quite gets. Yes, it is way-gay high-camp - it is a Handbag Production after all. But it captures what is best about gay humor and uses it to turn the story on its head (or upside-down, as the case may be). The songs are top-notch, the acting superb, the choreography surprisingly clever, the special effects absolutely brilliant (wait until you see the ship capsize). It all adds up to one of those rare evenings out when you just cannot remember when the last time was you enjoyed a show so much. It also smacks of one of those way-below-the-radar-type shows that gets all this buzz and eventually makes its way into the mainstream culture where it is “discovered” and suddenly becomes the best ticket in town. I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!
