Rick Karlin

Rick Karlin is tickled magenta to be asked to be an ensemble member of HIAH, particularly since he has no discernible performance skills whatsoever. A longtime writer (novels include Death on the Rocks, Tales of the Second City and Hollywood Kids), playwright (Spin Cycle, Musical, Scrap Book, Ladies at Large, Full of Beenes and Seuss on the Loose) and journalist (GayLife newspaper in the mid to late '70s, Gay Chicago Magazine's editor in the '80 and early '90s, Outlines in mid '90s and currently with Chicago Free Press and Metromix). He has also worked with a number of charities doing fundraising and organization-often as his drag persona, Charity Case. He was inducted into Chicago's Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1997. He teaches gifted kids and is the sponsor of his school's Jr. High level drama club. He is currently working on his doctorate.

He became a fan of the company members' work with Joan Crawford Goes to Hell and currently helps out with fundraising and the opening night reception for shows. Rick has two 30 year-old sons, Adam (single and Rick would love to marry him off) and Tim (married to the lovely Laurie). He and his spouse of 10+ years, Gregg Shapiro, live in Uptown with their beloved dog Dusty.
