Behind the Scenes: The Making of the Drag Ball

don we now our gay apparel...

The sets, props, and costumes for Rudolph are always a mix of the old and the new. Reindeer in long underwear, for example, goes back to the very first Rudolph --though I hope that they've gotten new long underwear by now. The tradition of the Drag Beast Snowball goes back ...three years, I guess. As many props as possible are reused; but we keep having to remake the snowball, because it's fragile & then some elf kicks it backstage. So we keep experimenting, trying to make it better and stronger...

This was a great find --a sixteen-inch Giant Smashing Playground Ball! This will be the core of the snowball. We used to use a big balloon, but this will be rounder and nicer.

So the first thing to do is cut up some newspaper for the papier-mache.

Then you apply the paper to the ball, using a mixture of glue and water.

It's very sticky.

  "PUNY HUMAN NOT COVER HULK!"

Who do you think would win in a fight, the Hulk or the Drag Beast?

Just a quick coat of primer, so that the newspaper doesn't show through.

This is lightweight spackle. It looks exactly like snow.

Several layers of paint go on next --white, of course; then blue, for highlights; and then some glaze with pearl powder added.

We saved the box. Hopefully, this will protect the ball backstage.

Here's the final product in action! We're not showing you too much of the Drag Beast, because you should come to the show and see for yourself!
